Our story

We are Elise and Mark Jansen. Before our journey brought us across the world, we lived a quiet and familiar life in the Netherlands, in the city of Haarlem, just outside Amsterdam. It was there that we began building our family, grounded in simplicity, close relationships, and a shared love for clothing, fabrics, and craftsmanship.

In 1999, everything changed.

Shortly after the birth of our daughter Sophie, we learned that she was seriously ill. What began as small concerns quickly turned into months of hospital visits, uncertainty, and difficult conversations. Despite the high-quality care available to us in the Netherlands, we were advised that the most specialized treatment for her condition was available abroad — particularly in Australia.

It was the most difficult decision we have ever made.

Leaving home in 2000

In early 2000, with Sophie still a baby, we left the Netherlands. We said goodbye to our families, friends, and the life we had built in Haarlem. We arrived in Australia with little more than suitcases, medical records, and hope — unsure whether we would stay for months or for a lifetime.

The early years were humbling. We lived simply, adapted to a new culture, and focused entirely on Sophie’s health. Over time, her condition stabilized, and for the first time, we allowed ourselves to imagine a future again.

In 2001, our son Lucas was born in Australia. His birth marked a turning point. What began as an emergency slowly became the place we would call home.

Creating something of our own

As our lives found a new rhythm, we returned to something that had always been close to our hearts: clothing. We believe deeply that what people wear influences how they feel — especially during times of uncertainty.

We opened a small shop, guided by craftsmanship, quality, and timeless design rather than trends. We chose to grow slowly, stay close to our customers, and do things with care and intention.

Over time, the shop became more than a business. It became an expression of our journey — resilience, attention to detail, and belief in doing things properly.

A family business

Our children grew up between fabrics, fittings, and conversations about quality and responsibility. What once began out of necessity grew into purpose. Today, our business remains family-run, shaped by the same values that guided us from the beginning.

Giving back

We never forget why our journey began. Access to the right care at the right time changed our daughter’s life — and ours. That experience shaped our belief that success also carries responsibility.

This is why we support initiatives aligned with the World Health Organization (WHO), contributing to global efforts focused on health, well-being, and access to care.

Why we do what we do

At its heart, what we create is rooted in family, care, and belief — belief in craftsmanship, belief in people, and belief in giving back when we can.

This is our story.
And it is the foundation of everything we continue to build.

With gratitude,
Family Jansen
